This shape of this Meissen coffee cup and saucer is quite rare as it has been specially adapted to enable the coffee to be poured into the saucer, presumably to allow the liquid to cool more quickly to a suitable temperature. The decoration imitates Chinese (Batavian ware) teacups and saucers.\r\n\r\nThe tradition of coffee drinking originated in Ethiopia and only spread to Europe during the 1600s via the Middle East.","physicalDescription":"Pouring teabowl and drinking saucer of hard-paste porcelain with a lustrous brown ground and underglaze blue decoration in Chinese style.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Meissen porcelain factory","id":"A9173"},"association":{"text":"manufacturer","id":"x33306"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"porcelain","id":"AAT10662"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Hard-paste porcelain, decorated with a brown ground and painted in underglaze blue enamels","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Porcelain","id":"THES48907"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2008BT2539","2009CC7114","2008BT0356","2006AB0846","2008BT0382"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"145 (VA)","id":"THES49865"},"free":"","case":"38","shelf":"1","box":""},{"current":{"text":"145 (VA)","id":"THES49865"},"free":"","case":"38","shelf":"1","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Pouring cup","id":""}],[{"text":"Drinking saucer","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Meissen","id":"x35076"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1735-1740","earliest":"1730-01-01","latest":"1740-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"From the Arthur and Hilde Weiner Collection.
