The hand and sketchbook in this image were his own. Mara suffered from a medical condition that causes the little finger gradually to bend towards the palm of his hand. On the right-hand open page of the sketchbook, the artist's record of the progress of the condition can be seen in the dated outline drawings of his finger. The chandelier on the left-hand page features in another work from the period.
