These included brightly coloured slipwares from Bukhara, Samarkand and Rishtan, as well as white-glazed wares, painted in blue and purple, from Kokand.\r\n\r\nThere is no evidence that these wares were made in continuation of an earlier local tradition. They are frequently found in Western collections, and it is likely that the West was an important market. So, although this appears to be traditional \"peasant\" pottery made by and for local communities, it may actually be a conscious attempt to capitalise on the desire for such traditional goods among modern consumers.","physicalDescription":"Buff-coloured earthenware dish painted in blue, green and purple on a white slip ground, under a clear glaze.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"earthenware","id":"x29356"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Earthenware with painted decoration on a white slip ground","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Earthenware","id":"THES48964"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MES","id":"THES48607"},"images":["2007BN4059","2007BN4060"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"137","id":"THES49876"},"free":"","case":"32","shelf":"4","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"dish","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Turkestan","id":"x36500"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1800-1900","earliest":"1795-01-01","latest":"1900-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Sir Charles Marling KCMG, CB","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"13","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"dimensions from register","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Dish, earthenware, painted decoration on a white slip ground, Turkestan, probably Kokand, 19th century.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"probably Kokand","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["C.137-1909"],"accessionNumberNum":"137","accessionNumberPrefix":"C","accessionYear":1909,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-09-19","recordCreationDate":"2009-04-17","availableToBook":false}}
