By the time this bowl was cast in the 13th or 14th century, the demands of a large ruling elite and wealthy Buddhist monasteries after the turn of the Koryo dynasty (918–1392) had stimulated important new developments in the production of metal.\r\n\r\nThis bowl was buried in a tomb, where it was believed to accompany the dead person into the afterworld. Prolonged contact with the earth has produced a striking corrosion pattern on the bowl’s surface. Its shape is similar to that of ceramics from the same period. A Korean saying states that ceramics are for summer use and metal for winter and it was not uncommon for metal and ceramic versions of the same vessels to be made.","physicalDescription":"The bowls rather thick walls slope outwards to an everted rim. Corrosion is particularly at the join-line of the foot. The foot is of circular diameter. \n\nColour: Yellow-grey","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"bronze","id":"AAT10957"}],"techniques":[{"text":"casting","id":"AAT53104"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Bronze, cast and foot-joined","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"}],"styles":[{"text":"Koryô","id":"AAT134127"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2006AU3621","2011ET4109","2018LA3639","2018LA3640","2018LA3657","2018LA3658","2018LA3662","2018LA3663","2018LA3677"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES367675"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"BOWL","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Korea","id":"x30965"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1200-1392","earliest":"1200-01-01","latest":"1392-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"8.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"14.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Met, Korea, vess/cont/holders","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Beth McKillop. <u>Korean Art and Design</u>.
