A large mirror of this form, on a tripod stand, but of British make, is in the collections of the V&amp;A (W.17-1961). The image of the marquetry is copied from an engraving by C-N Cochon, published in 1737,of J. de Lajoue's painting 'L'Astronomie'.  This identification was first published in 1968 by Geoffrey de Bellaigue in  'Ruins in Marquetry' (see References below).","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Commode, French, 1780-1790, stamped by J. Slab of Carrara Second Statuary marble\r\n\r\nJoseph Stockel (1743-1802) became a master cabinet-maker in  1775 and executed much work for the French crown. Similar marquetry is found on the work of other masters and suggests that these panels were produced in a specialist workshop.  The central panel shows and Archimedean mirror in use; the scene was drawn by C.N. Cochin and engraved by Lajoue [NOTE: this is incorrect.
