It quickly became one of the most common and varied objects in an 18th-century interior. This form of commode, with three narrow frieze drawers mounted above two larger drawers, is of a type known as 'transitional'. The form developed in the period between Louis XV and Louis XVI. ","physicalDescription":"Break-front commode, raised on cabriole legs. The case of oak and softwood, veneered in mahogany with a trellis pattern of ebony and boxwood. \n\nThe commode has two large drawers, with three small drawers in the frieze. It is mounted with gilt-brass, including three vertical rectangular frames which run across the fronts of the two large drawers, emphasising the break-front form of the case. At frieze level, these vertical frames are topped with three horizontal rectangle frames, each enclosing an interlacing garland of ivy. Each side of the case is similarly mounted with a vertical brass frame below a horizontal frame enclosing a brass garland. The large drawers are mounted with circular drawer pulls.\n\nThe commode is topped with a white marble slab.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Jean-Henri Riesener","id":"A6334"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28674"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"oak","id":"AAT12264"},{"text":"softwood","id":"AAT12510"},{"text":"mahogany","id":"AAT12221"},{"text":"ebony","id":"AAT12055"},{"text":"boxwood","id":"AAT12002"},{"text":"brass","id":"AAT10946"}],"techniques":[{"text":"veneering","id":"AAT53878"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"oak and softwood, veneered in mahogany with marquetry of ebony and boxwood, gilt brass mounts, marble slab.","categories":[{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2006AM2379","2006AM2378","2006AM2377","2006AM2376","2006AL4844"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES302808"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES341940"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES341940"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES341940"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES341940"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES341940"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES341940"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES341940"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Key","id":""}],[{"text":"Drawer","id":""}],[{"text":"Drawer","id":""}],[{"text":"Drawer","id":""}],[{"text":"Drawer","id":""}],[{"text":"Drawer","id":""}],[{"text":"Marble slab","id":""}],[{"text":"Commode","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1775-1780","earliest":"1775-01-01","latest":"1780-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by John Jones","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"85.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"115","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"58","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Stamped 'JH RIESENER' on the top of each of the four stiles","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"This commode was given to the Museum in 1882, as part of a large bequest by the military tailor and businessman John Jones.
