Goyer J.M.E.’\n\r\nThe case of this bracket clock is veneered with boulle-work, a technique creating decorative patterns by mixing an element such as wood or shell (or in this case horn) with a coloured pigment and applied the substance onto the surface of clocks and furniture. In France the boulle-work technique went out of fashion for full-sized furniture around 1715, but clock-cases continued to be decorated in this way well into the mid-18th century. Green boulle-work, as seen here, was very popular during the 1740s and 1750s. \n\r\nThe clock case is in rococo style with engraved, gilded brass inlays of carnations (suggestive of Middle Eastern ceramics) and gilt bronze mounts of foliage scrolls, bunches of flowers and shells. Directly below the clock is a dragon giving the design a chinoiserie effect. \r\n\r\n","physicalDescription":"Bracket clock veneered with boulle-work consisting of horn, backed with green pigment, and engraved brass; gilt bronze mounts.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Goyer, Francois","id":"AUTH398998"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":"case"},{"name":{"text":"Flournoy, Pierre","id":"AUTH398999"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":"movement"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"brass","id":"AAT10946"},{"text":"horn","id":"AAT11826"}],"techniques":[{"text":"clock making","id":"AAT53600"},{"text":"boulle","id":"AAT53854"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Clocks & Watches","id":"THES48976"}],"styles":[{"text":"rococo","id":"AAT21155"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2006AL7534","2006AL7536","2010EB1113","2010EB1108","2010EB1106","2006AK7735","2006AL7558","2006AL7557","2006AL7556","2006AL7555","2006AL7553","2010EB1130"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"3","id":"THES263060"},"free":"","case":"CA12","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"3","id":"THES263060"},"free":"","case":"CA12","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES303462"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"bracket","id":""}],[{"text":"Bracket clock","id":""}],[{"text":"Pendulum","id":"AAT235975"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1740-1760","earliest":"1740-01-01","latest":"1760-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Gift of Miss Rachel Leighton through Art Fund","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"1250","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"510","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"270","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Dial plate marked ‘FLOURNOY A PARIS’; case stamped 'F GOYER'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Clock and bracket, brass and boulle work, movement by Pierre Flournoy and case by François.
