On its own, the qipao is itself a modernised form of the dress worn by Manchu and Han women of the Qing dynasty. By the 1940s, the dress had become tailored to be much more form-fitting, and this dress, tailored in the 1950s or 60s, retains this feature. The short sleeves may reflect on the relatively more humid climate of Hong Kong, where the dress was made. Worn on its own, the dress exudes an undeniably Chinese flavour. However, the jacket is reminiscent of the style made fashionable by the United States First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. When worn over the dress, it cleverly transforms the Chinese dress into a Western suit ensemble.","physicalDescription":"Woman's dress (qipao or cheongsam) and a jacket in woven and printed wild silk.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Hoover Co.","id":"AUTH357289"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silk textile","id":"AAT243428"}],"techniques":[{"text":"weaving","id":"AAT53642"},{"text":"printing","id":"AAT53319"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Woven and printed wild silk","categories":[{"text":"Womenswear","id":"THES49044"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2017JX7262","2006AP7889","2019MH9676"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"010","id":"THES390082"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"010","id":"THES390082"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Qipao","id":""}],[{"text":"Jacket","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Hong Kong","id":"x30049"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1950-1960","earliest":"1950-01-01","latest":"1960-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Richard and Janey Cheu, in memory of Dr. Henry Cheu","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Woman's dress (qipao or cheongsam) and a jacket in woven and printed wild silk, made by Hoover Co.
