Preoccupied with finely crafted early-industrial English earthenware, they set about developing clays and glazes in imitation of creamware. In 1974 they first made their 'Walking teaset', which became so popular that in order to satisfy demand they organised mass-production of the teaset by the industrial Staffordshire pottery, Carlton Ware. This version was hand-made for the Museum by the potters. Commercial production stopped in 1981. The quirky, Postmodern, and quintessentially English design can be interpreted as a reaction to the stonewares favoured by the studio pottery movement.","physicalDescription":"White cream jug, with feet, painted with brown shoes and white socks with brown and black checks.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Michell, Roger","id":"A2937"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Napiorkowska, Danka","id":"A2938"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Lustre Pottery","id":"AUTH348859"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"earthenware","id":"x29356"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"cream-coloured earthenware, painted in colours, hand-made","categories":[{"text":"ELISE","id":"THES48961"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2008BR9486","2006AT7883"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"140 (VA)","id":"THES49871"},"free":"","case":"15","shelf":"3","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Cream jug","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Malton","id":"x37460"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1974","earliest":"1974-01-01","latest":"1974-12-31"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x30230"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"1980","earliest":"1980-01-01","latest":"1980-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"7.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"12","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Cream jug, from the 'Walking teaset', Michell and Napiorkowska, designed 1974, made 1980","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["C.78B-1981"],"accessionNumberNum":"78","accessionNumberPrefix":"C","accessionYear":1981,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-20","recordCreationDate":"2000-02-02","availableToBook":false}}
