Water played an important role in such gardens, as did sculpture. Unfortunately during the following centuries many of these gardens around Paris were altered or destroyed, including Versailles and Marly.\r\n\r\nFountains were designed and created by artists of various backgrounds, ranging from sculptors to architects, fountain engineers and landscape designers. It is not yet clear from which garden or fountain this lively mask originates. Form and function are comparable to the surviving masks of the <i>Bassin de Neptune</i> in Versailles which was started in 1678 based upon designs by André Le Nôtre (architecture) and Charles Le Brun (decoration).","physicalDescription":"Mask/fountain spout, in the shape of a bearded river-god, cast lead, France, late 17th century","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"lead","id":"AAT11022"}],"techniques":[{"text":"casting","id":"AAT53104"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"cast lead","categories":[{"text":"Gardens & Gardening","id":"THES49002"},{"text":"Architectural fittings","id":"THES48994"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[{"text":"Baroque","id":"AAT21147"},{"text":"Louis XIV","id":"AAT21080"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"AMS","id":"THES49692"},"free":"","case":"BY6","shelf":"FLR","box":"PALLET3"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Mask","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"France","id":"x28849"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1670-1700","earliest":"1670-01-01","latest":"1700-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"70","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"max.","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"56","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"max","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Lead, France, ca.1670-1700","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Weber, Gerold, <u>Brunnen und Wasserkünstye im Frankreich im Zeitalter von Louis XIV</u>.
