These included brightly coloured slipwares from Bukhara, Samarkand and Rishtan, as well as white-glazed wares, painted in blue and purple, from Kokand.\r\n\r\nThere is no evidence that these wares were made in continuation of an earlier local tradition. They are frequently found in Western collections, and it is likely that the West was an important market. So, although this appears to be traditional \"peasant\" pottery made by and for local communities, it may actually be a conscious attempt to capitalise on the desire for such traditional goods among modern consumers.","physicalDescription":"Dish of buff-coloured earthenware, with decoration painted in coloured slips on a blue-grey slip ground, with sgraffito details, covered in a clear glaze. In the middle are three flowers separated by foliage within a band of sgraffito ornament. On the rim are flowers and sprays of foliage arranged alternately. The lower side of the rim is painted with four circular devices.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"earthenware","id":"x29356"},{"text":"slip","id":"AAT10459"},{"text":"glaze","id":"AAT15091"}],"techniques":[{"text":"glazed","id":"AAT53914"},{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Earthenware decorated with coloured slips, covered in a clear glaze","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Earthenware","id":"THES48964"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MES","id":"THES48607"},"images":["2007BP1225","2007BP1140"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"137 (VA)","id":"THES49876"},"free":"","case":"32","shelf":"4","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"dish","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Turkestan","id":"x36500"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1800-1900","earliest":"1795-01-01","latest":"1900-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Sir Charles Marling KCMG, CB","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"31.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Dish of buff-coloured earthenware, decorated with floral designs painted in coloured slips, Turkestan, probably Samarkand or Bukhara, 19th century.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"probably Samarkand or Bukhara","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"foliated","id":"AAT165104"},{"text":"floral","id":"AAT10135"},{"text":"flowers","id":"x35571"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["C.136-1909"],"accessionNumberNum":"136","accessionNumberPrefix":"C","accessionYear":1909,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-20","recordCreationDate":"2009-03-25","availableToBook":false}}
