In intaglio printing thick sticky ink was applied to the plate, which was then gradually wiped clean, leaving the ink just in the grooves which represented the image. Dampened paper was placed on top of the plate and the two were sandwiched between felts to protect them from the impact of the roller press. When they were passed through the roller, the pressure forced the paper to take up the ink from the grooves, transferring the image. It has been suggested that the artist depicted in this image is Constance Pott (1862–1957), technical and teaching assistant at the Royal College of Art between 1902 and 1924.","physicalDescription":"Etching depicting a figure operating a printing press in a studio with a desk in front of a window and shelves holding bottles in the right hand corner.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Sloane, Mary Anne ARE","id":"A16367"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper (fiber product)","id":"AAT14109"},{"text":"Printing ink","id":"AAT187371"}],"techniques":[{"text":"etching","id":"AAT53241"},{"text":"","id":""}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Etching, ink on paper.","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Printmaking techniques","id":"THES252987"},{"text":"Portraits","id":"THES48906"},{"text":"Women artists","id":"THES387590"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2024NT0187"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"102","id":"THES49932"},"free":"","case":"CA001","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca.1904","earliest":"1899-01-01","latest":"1908-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"17.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"24/04/2025","earliest":"2025-04-24","latest":"2025-04-24"},"part":"Plate","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"24.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"24/04/2025","earliest":"2025-04-24","latest":"2025-04-24"},"part":"Plate","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"21.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"24/04/2025","earliest":"2025-04-24","latest":"2025-04-24"},"part":"Sheet","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"27.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"24/04/2025","earliest":"2025-04-24","latest":"2025-04-24"},"part":"Sheet","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"On verso: (AN12403)","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"It has been suggested that the woman depicted is Constance Pott (b.1862) printmaker and author of <i>Francis Bacon and His secret Society</i>.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"'An Artist Working at her Press', etching by Mary Annie Sloane, London, Great Britain, ca.1904","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"<u>Victoria and Albert Museum Department of Prints, Drawings and Paintings Accession Register for 1995</u>"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"printing press","id":"AAT22763"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.318-1995"],"accessionNumberNum":"318","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":1995,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-05-12","recordCreationDate":"2009-03-24","availableToBook":false}}
