It was painted for the Arundel Society, founded in 1848 to promote knowledge of art through the publication of reproductions of works of art. The Arundel Society popularised Renaissance art, particularly that of the Italian Old Masters, echoing the growing interest in ‘primitives’ (art of western Europe prior to the Renaissance) during the second half of the nineteenth century. This watercolour was published as a chromolithograph in 1869.\n\r\nFra Bartolomeo became a friar in 1500 and he was a fervent follower of Savonarola (1452-1498, priest and preacher active in Florence). The artist moved to Venice in 1508, where he was able to combine the Venetian use of colour with his existing technique. In the Nineteenth century Fra Bartolomeo was generally considered a follower of the Florentine High Renaissance painters, only becoming recognised as an important artist in his own right later in the century.\r\n","physicalDescription":"A jung woman, the Virgin, wearing a red and yellow robe, holds the Child in her arms.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Bartolommeo Frà","id":"A28286"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Kaiser, Edward","id":"A15980"},"association":{"text":"copyist","id":"AAT25189"},"note":"Copy after Fra Bartolomeo"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Arundel Society","id":"A7579"},"association":{"text":"commissioned and published","id":"x38773"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"watercolour on paper","id":"x32486"}],"techniques":[{"text":"watercolour drawing","id":"x37878"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Watercolour on paper","categories":[{"text":"Christianity","id":"THES48978"},{"text":"Copies and Facsimilies","id":"THES253072"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2015HT5353"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLH","id":"THES49654"},"free":"","case":"PD","shelf":"342","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Watercolour","id":"x33202"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Florence","id":"x28848"},"association":{"text":"copied","id":"x46488"},"note":"Convento di San Marco"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"second half 19th century","earliest":"1850-01-01","latest":"1899-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"413","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"arched top","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"280","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"arched top","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"413 x 280 mm (arched top)","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Inscribed in ink, lower left EDUARD KAISER","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Acquired in 1995 from the National Gallery of London.\r\nWatercolour copy made for the Arundel Society by Edward Kaiser and published as chromolithograph in 1869.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Watercolour, copy after Virgin and Child, Fra Bartolomeo in the Convent of San Marco (Florence), Edward Kaiser, second half 19th century","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Tanya Ledger, A Study of the Arundel Society 1848-1897.
