Grimsthorpe was a partly medieval and partly Tudor house, but the north range had been rebuilt in the 1680's in the domestic style of the day. This design is certainly preliminary to what was carried out, since it shows coupled square piers instead of banded columns and the doorcase has a projecting pediment supported on brackets; nevertheless it belongs in style to Vanbrugh's plainest years, after Blenheim and before Seaton Delaval. \r\n\r\nThis drawing is part of the Vanbrugh Album from the Library at Elton Hall. The Album contains 254 drawings and includes works by Sir John Vanbrugh, Sir Edward Lovett Pearce, William Talman, Nicholas Hawksmoor, Richard Castle and anonymous draughtsmen in Vanbrugh's office. It was created ca. 1945-54 and was purchased by Victoria and Albert Museum in 1992.","physicalDescription":"Elevation of a design for the main front of Grimsthorpe Castle, Lincolnshire.
