It became the leading political force opposing the communist regime in Poland. Eventually the Polish Government was forced to negotiate with the Solidarity-led opposition, resulting in semi-free elections on 4th June 1989. This marked a crucial stage in the democratic transformation of Central and Eastern Europe.\n\nThe Solidarity logo was designed by Jerzy Janiszewski. The design was inspired by slogans written and stenciled on walls during the strike so is inspired by the grafitti of the workers. Solidarność was also the name of the strike newsletter and soon became the official name of the Free Trade Unions. The letters are intended to call to mind the shape of people joined together in a dense crowd. The logo quickly gained traction and spread across Poland and abroad. It became the source of a typeface called ‘Solidarics’ (Solidaryca) which has become an unofficial Polish national typeface. It is often used for logos and slogans which refer to Poland in general as well for content relating to themes of freedom and democracy.\r\n","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Staeck, Klaus","id":"A15388"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Staeck, Klaus","id":"A15388"},"association":{"text":"publisher","id":"x32600"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Hombach, Bodo","id":"A24925"},"association":{"text":"publisher","id":"x32600"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Steidl, Gerhard","id":"A15389"},"association":{"text":"printer","id":"x30811"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Edition Staeck","id":"A15390"},"association":{"text":"published by","id":"x28702"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"printing ink","id":"AAT187371"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Lithograph on paper","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Printed pages & sheets","id":"THES48904"},{"text":"Politics","id":"THES48908"},{"text":"Posters","id":"THES252963"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2009BW9925"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLC (VA)","id":"THES49171"},"free":"","case":"GG","shelf":"59","box":"F"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"poster","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Poland","id":"x29083"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x29338"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Germany","id":"x28873"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"AAT53319"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1980-1981","earliest":"1980-01-01","latest":"1981-12-31"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x29338"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Solidarity with Solidarity","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"59","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"size of sheet","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"41.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"size of sheet","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Poster for Solidarity from a portfolio printed in Germany entitled 'Jeszcze Polska nie zginęła'.
