This set, published in 1780, is based on an earlier set by William Hogarth entitled 'The Harlot's Progress' (1732) and shows how his influence on printmaking remained strong fifty years on. \r\n\r\nThis print depicts the interior of the Statute Hall, a place where employers paid a fee to inspect prospective servants. However this print echoes a contemporary book by Richard King entitled 'The Frauds of London', which accuses Statute Halls of operating to procure prostitutes.","physicalDescription":"A well-kept interior of a Statute Hall, where Harriet Heedless, identified by the letters HH on the box that she holds, has arrived to find a position as a servant. Harriet's dress, a cap and kerchief over a bodice and apron, identifies her as a country girl. On the wall are two frames pictures of men on horseback and two identical elaborately framed oval mirrors on either side of a three-part window with the central part arched. The hall manager stands (left) behind a counter and talks to a Rake who uses an eye-glass to look at Harriet from a distance. Harriet is handed a card by the 'Bawd', who is dressed fashionably and with her hair piled high under a hat. In the shop are a crowd of people. Next to the window a man strokes a girl on her chin. The window is a Serlian window.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Carington Bowles","id":"AUTH318792"},"association":{"text":"printer","id":"x30811"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"printing ink","id":"AAT187371"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"etching","id":"AAT53241"},{"text":"engraving","id":"AAT53225"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Etching and engraving","categories":[{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Interiors","id":"THES48933"},{"text":"Satire","id":"THES250449"},{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2015HJ4476"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLC","id":"THES49171"},"free":"","case":"GG","shelf":"75","box":"C"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"x46159"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1780","earliest":"1780-01-01","latest":"1780-12-31"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":"15 May 1780"}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"E.535-1993","id":"O203874"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"E.536-1993","id":"O203875"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"E.537-1993","id":"O203876"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"E.538-1993","id":"O203877"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"E.539-1993","id":"O203878"},"association":"Set"}],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"18.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sheet","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"27.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sheet","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"The Modern HARLOT'S PROGRESS, or Adventures of HARRIET HEEDLESS.","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"across top above image"},{"content":"Harriet Heedless applying to a Statue Hall for a Place, is seen by a Rake, and decoy'd by a Bawd.
