When viewed through a stereoscope, it gives the illusion of a three-dimensional image. Stereographs were inexpensive and widely collected in the late 19th century. The sculpture Tinted Venus aroused controversy when it was first exhibited in 1862. One magazine denounced it as ‘a naked impudent English woman’, while another thought it ‘one of the most beautiful and elaborate figures undertaken in modern times’.\n\r\nStereographs\r\nMuseum nos.
