The gilt metal ring was used for suspension. It is probably a pendant to the relief of William III (A.125-1956), though they differ somewhat in size.\n\n\r\nCavalier (1650/60-1698/9) was an itinerant French Huguenot ivory sculptor, who worked in France and England. His career is obscure until 1684, by which time he was a carver of portraits in ivory of exceptional talent and probably already settled in England.
