Barnard was employed by the Topographical Branch of one of the principal Union armies to document the terrain. Here, the winding Tennessee River emerges from behind mountain trees in the picture’s foreground. Barnard evidently valued the aesthetic quality of his work, and sometimes even used multiple negatives to enhance its visual impact.
