Méchin travelled to Iran on several occasions in the 1860s, returning with objects to sell. He sold multiple examples of this moulded horseman tile, proposing to his various clients that they portrayed the Safavid shah `Abbas II (r.1642-66), and had been \"found among the ruins\" of Farahabad palace in Isfahan. Nonetheless, these tiles date from the nineteenth century.
