Around 1900 he set up his own pottery at Coldrum, near Wrotham in Kent, before later moving it to London. Wells was one of the first true studio potters (i.e., a non-factory potter), working on an entirely independent basis. His interests lay in exactly those areas that were to preoccupy studio potters in later decades, namely English slipwares and Chinese stonewares. Wells's work has a somewhat amateur and experimental look when compared to that of the next generation (B. J. Leach, Michael Cardew, William Staite Murray) who were to follow in his path.","physicalDescription":"Stoneware bowl with an opaque white glaze.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Wells, Reginald","id":"A2802"},"association":{"text":"makers","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"stoneware","id":"x30197"}],"techniques":[{"text":"glazed","id":"AAT53914"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Stoneware, opaque white glaze","categories":[{"text":"Studio Pottery","id":"THES48889"},{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Stoneware","id":"THES48890"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2009CB8587","2006AN8063","2017KC2547"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"139","id":"THES49874"},"free":"","case":"43","shelf":"2","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Bowl","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Chelsea","id":"x31142"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"possibly"},{"place":{"text":"Storrington","id":"x36067"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"possibly"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1925","earliest":"1920-01-01","latest":"1929-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Bernard Rackham","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Depth","value":"9.30","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"6.00","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'SOON', incised","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Acquisition details: given by Bernard Rackham\n\nRF number: 25/4771","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Stoneware bowl with an opaque white glaze, made by R.
