From 15 September- 9 November 1991 British Rail gave purchasers of the Young Person's Railcard the option to donate 40p of the cost to Friends of the Earth. British Rail recognised that Friends of the Earth had a high level of support from young people, and its own Environmental Policy Group was concerned with issues of energy efficiency, pollution, reduction of noise and vibration and the protection of wildlife.
