After the proclamation of Martial Law in Poland on December 13th 1981, Solidarity was proscribed by the communist authorities and Free Trade Unions activists were imprisoned. The simple one-colour form of the poster, low-budget paper and the simple printing technique suggest that it was an underground edition. These kind of posters were produced quickly and secretly in private apartments and artists’ studios. They were widespread on the streets. This particular poster calls for the release of all political prisoners. It mentions the ‘Gdansk Agreement’ signed by the Solidarity and the government after the strikes on the Polish coast in August 1980. Part of the Agreement had been the government’s commitment to release political prisoners and to cease the persecution of the opposition's members\r\n\r\nSolidarity, founded in September 1980, was the first free trade union in an Eastern Bloc country. It became the leading political force opposing the communist regime in Poland. Eventually the Polish Government was forced to negotiate with the Solidarity-led opposition, resulting in semi-free elections on 4th June 1989.
