It is not a single game, but a family of related games with many national and historical variations. It is a game for two and the aim is to capture all of the opponent's pieces and remove them from the board, or move the pieces so that the opponent is unable to make a move. There are twenty-four playing pieces, twelve for each player. Traditionally these are of two colours, black and white. Some older sets use red instead of black. The player with the dark piece always moves first.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Chad Valley Company Limited","id":"A1123"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Games","id":"THES48947"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"YVA","id":"THES48593"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"011","id":"THES324260"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"011","id":"THES324260"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"011","id":"THES324260"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"boxes (containers)","id":"AAT45643"}],[{"text":"playing pieces","id":"AAT45643"}],[{"text":"playing board","id":"AAT45643"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1930's","earliest":"1930-01-01","latest":"1939-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Norman Andrews","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Boxed set of Draughtsmen with playing board made by Chad Valley, England, in the 1930's.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"Mass produced","id":"THES48863"},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["B.137:3-2004","B.137:2-2004","B.137:1-2004"],"accessionNumberNum":"137","accessionNumberPrefix":"B","accessionYear":2004,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","boxes (containers)","playing pieces","playing board"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-08-03","recordCreationDate":"2009-03-02","availableToBook":false}}
