Born in The Sudan in 1931, Siddig followed a two-year period as a calligrapher by enrolling at the School of Art in Khartoum. It was there that he began to specialise in pottery. In 1957 he travelled to London to study ceramics at the Central School of Art. In 1967 he settled permanently in England. Siddig popularised the use of traditional African pottery techniques within British studio ceramics. His pots were handbuilt, their surfaces burnished by polishing with a stone or similar tool, and left unglazed. This vessel was purchased from an exhibition of jugs organised by the Craftsmen Potters Association (now the Craft Potters Association) in 1980. 'Ibreeq' is an Arabic word for jug.","physicalDescription":"Drinking vessel Earthenware, unglazed burnished clay with incised decoration in the form of a two spouted vessel on four feet","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"El Nigoumi, Siddig","id":"A2678"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Earthenware","id":"x29356"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Earthenware, unglazed burnished clay, incised decoration","categories":[{"text":"Studio Pottery","id":"THES48889"},{"text":"Images Online","id":"THES48937"},{"text":"Black History","id":"THES48989"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2006AN8401"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"007","id":"THES388597"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Vessel","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1980","earliest":"1980-01-01","latest":"1980-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Depth","value":"20.50","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"22.40","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'Nigoumi 80'and a scorpion, incised","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Acquisition details: CPA, London 'Jugs' exhibition, 1980","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Drinking vessel by Siddig El Nigoumi, earthenware, Britain, 1980.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Watson, Oliver. <i>British Studio Pottery : the Victoria and Albert Museum Collection</i>, Oxford : Phaidon, Christie's, in association with the Victoria and Albert Museum, 1990","id":"AUTH351364"},"details":"","free":""}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"Design and the diaspora\n\nAs a consequence of empire, people have moved between countries. Often expressed in creative practice, designers draw on influences from their birthplace, family heritage and the places they call home. From the 1970s onwards, the Sudanese-born, UK based ceramicist Siddig El Nigoumi popularised ancient African and Arabic pottery techniques like unglazed, burnished clay in British studio ceramics. And similarly, in the post-war years, Joaquim Tenreiro, who came from a Portuguese family of woodworkers, forged a new style of furniture design in his adopted country, Brazil.
