He has also been an influential teacher, both at Eton College, where he taught pottery and sculpture, and as a lecturer at Camberwell and the Central School of Art (both in London). His early works were a pure exploration of abstract sculptural form, and would typically be finished with shiny dark glazes. From the 1970s, however, Baldwin has shown an increasing interest in ceramic vessel forms, and the interplay between shape and painted surface. This particular sail-like form makes visual reference to a type of boat found on the River Nile in Egypt, as mentioned in a poem by the Greek author Giorgios Seferis.","physicalDescription":"Sculpture in the form of an extended dish, earthenware, press-moulded and slab-built, decorated with slips and pigments.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Baldwin, Gordon","id":"A2629"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Earthenware","id":"x29356"}],"techniques":[{"text":"glazed","id":"AAT53914"},{"text":"painted","id":"AAT54216"},{"text":"incised","id":"AAT53847"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Earthenware, press-moulded and slab-built, decorated with slips and pigments","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Earthenware","id":"THES48964"},{"text":"Studio Pottery","id":"THES48889"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2006AN8408"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"139 (VA)","id":"THES49874"},"free":"","case":"44","shelf":"5","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"sculpture","id":"AAT47090"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1980","earliest":"1980-01-01","latest":"1980-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Depth","value":"40.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"35.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'GB 80', painted","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Purchased from the Craftsmen Potters Association, London (exhibition with Nick Homoky, Ruth and Alan Barrett-Danes, and Peter Simpson, 1980, no.24), £250.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Sculpture, 'Extended dish: Seferis Series No. 1', earthenware, Gordon Baldwin, England, 1980","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Watson, Oliver. <i>British Studio Pottery : the Victoria and Albert Museum Collection</i>, Oxford : Phaidon, Christie's, in association with the Victoria and Albert Museum, 1990","id":"AUTH351364"},"details":"","free":""},{"reference":{"text":"Graves, Alun. <u>Studio Ceramics: British Studio Pottery 1900 to Now</u>.
