He has also been an influential teacher, both at Eton College, where he taught pottery and sculpture, and as a lecturer at Camberwell and the Central School of Art (both in London). His early works were a pure exploration of abstract sculptural form, and would typically be finished with shiny dark glazes, as is the case here. From the 1970s, however, Baldwin has shown an increasing interest in ceramic vessel forms, and the interplay between shape and painted surface.","physicalDescription":"Abstract sculptural form in two parts, one a standing form, the other a wave-like horizontal form. Earthenware, handbuilt, with black/brown lustrous metallic glaze. The forms were made by coiling. It was fired twice to 1100'C. The glaze is lead based with manganese and copper oxides as colourants.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Baldwin, Gordon","id":"A2629"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Earthenware","id":"x29356"}],"techniques":[{"text":"handbuilding","id":"THES391308"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Earthenware, handbuilt, lustrous black glaze","categories":[{"text":"Studio Pottery","id":"THES48889"},{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2006AN7547"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"142 (VA)","id":"THES49868"},"free":"","case":"17","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"142 (VA)","id":"THES49868"},"free":"","case":"17","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"sculpture","id":"AAT47090"}],[{"text":"form","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Eton","id":"x39986"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"Made in Gordon Baldwin's studio at Eton College."}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1969","earliest":"1969-01-01","latest":"1969-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by the artist","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Depth","value":"60.30","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"64.30","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Given by the artist (from solo exhibition: 'Objects from an Inscape', Crafts Centre of Great Britain, London, 1970, no.27).","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Sculpture in two parts, 'Seascape', earthenware, Gordon Baldwin, England, 1969","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Watson, Oliver. <i>British Studio Pottery : the Victoria and Albert Museum Collection</i>, Oxford : Phaidon, Christie's, in association with the Victoria and Albert Museum, 1990","id":"AUTH351364"},"details":"","free":""},{"reference":{"text":"Graves, Alun. <u>Studio Ceramics: British Studio Pottery 1900 to Now</u>.
