He explored handbuilding techniques and surface textures in a new style that strongly opposed the East Asian forms and glazes used by Bernard Leach and his followers. In the 1960s Arbeid was working on daring new pots, experimenting with imaginative and inventive forms and extremes of texture. He later worked primarily as a teacher. Arbeid said of this particular coil-built vase, ' It looked beautiful with cornflowers in it, but I wish I had it back now to alter that terrible rim'.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Arbeid, Dan","id":"A2627"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Stoneware","id":"x30197"}],"techniques":[{"text":"glazing (coating)","id":"AAT53914"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Stoneware, coil built, with an unglazed exterior and grey glazed interior","categories":[{"text":"Images Online","id":"THES48937"},{"text":"Studio Pottery","id":"THES48889"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2006AN7229","2018KY5770"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"142 (VA)","id":"THES49868"},"free":"","case":"18","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Vase","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"New Barnet","id":"x35727"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1959","earliest":"1959-01-01","latest":"1959-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Depth","value":"21.00","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"21.40","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'Arbeid', painted","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Acquisition details: Primavera, London\n\nRF number: 59/2255","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Vase by Dan Arbeid; stoneware; British; 1959.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Watson, Oliver. <i>British Studio Pottery : the Victoria and Albert Museum Collection</i>, Oxford : Phaidon, Christie's, in association with the Victoria and Albert Museum, 1990","id":"AUTH351364"},"details":"","free":""}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["CIRC.157-1959"],"accessionNumberNum":"157","accessionNumberPrefix":"CIRC","accessionYear":1959,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-11","recordCreationDate":"2000-01-14","availableToBook":false}}
