Originally intended as a moralising game, it taught children how virtuous qualities like patience, courage, and thrift would be rewarded by ascending a ladder to a higher position on the board. It also showed how bad behaviour and vices like temper, greed, and conceit would be punished by sliding down a snake. The aim of the game was to avoid the snakes and reach the last square on the board before your opponents.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Chad Valley Company Limited","id":"A1123"},"association":{"text":"publisher","id":"x32600"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Games","id":"THES48947"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"YVA","id":"THES48593"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES324050"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"NONE","id":"THES49066"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"NONE","id":"THES49066"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"NONE","id":"THES49066"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES343530"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"boxes (containers)","id":"AAT45643"}],[{"text":"playing pieces","id":"AAT211084"}],[{"text":"dice","id":"AAT211084"}],[{"text":"shaker","id":"AAT45643"}],[{"text":"playing board","id":"AAT45643"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x35383"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1930's","earliest":"1930-01-01","latest":"1939-12-31"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Norman Andrews","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"Rewards: forward movement along the ladders\r\nForfeits: backward movement along the snakes\r\nNumber of players: two or more\r\nEquipment required: dice, markers","briefDescription":"Card board game of Snakes and Ladders made in England by Chad Valley.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["B.138:5-2004","B.138:4-2004","B.138:3-2004","B.138:2-2004","B.138:1-2004"],"accessionNumberNum":"138","accessionNumberPrefix":"B","accessionYear":2004,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","boxes (containers)","playing pieces","dice","shaker","playing board"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-03-31","recordCreationDate":"2009-02-23","availableToBook":false}}
