The earliest pieces were designed for the domestic market. Production increased from 1650 onwards, with a large part of the industry being directed towards the making of pots for export to Europe. The use of a central scene surrounded by a panelled design is common among blue-and-white porcelain imported into Europe from both China and Japan. The centre of this particular dish bears the VOC monogram of the Dutch East India Company. The Dutch were the only Europeans permitted to maintain a trading post in Japan from 1639 until the re-opening of the country in the 1850s.","physicalDescription":"Six panels, VOC (= Dutch East India Company) logo in centre","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"porcelain","id":"AAT10662"}],"techniques":[{"text":"enamel","id":"AAT133676"},{"text":"underglaze","id":"AAT48642"},{"text":"blue and white","id":"x44546"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Porcelain decorated in underglaze blue","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"}],"styles":[{"text":"Edo period","id":"AAT106643"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2015HP0008","2006AM7703","2018KP0029"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"45","id":"THES49801"},"free":"","case":"CA003","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Dish","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Japan","id":"x29399"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Arita","id":"x31992"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1660-1680","earliest":"1660-01-01","latest":"1680-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":""},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"36.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"from register","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Purchased from Foster & Co.
