Howard, were used exclusively by William, 2nd Earl of Desmond and 3rd Earl of Denbigh, who was born 1640. He married a second wife, Mary, daughter of Henry Carey, Earl of Monmouth, after 1699, and died in 1685. The coronet is that of an Earl. The dexter arms are of FIELDING (Earls of Denbigh). The sinister coat is of CAREY. Mr Howard concludes 'the arms have, therefore, to be for an Earl of Denbigh and although there have been eleven Earls of Denbigh, only one was ever married to a Carey. This was the second wife of William, 2nd Earl of Desmond and 3rd Earl of Denbigh, who married after 1669 Mary, daughter of Henry Carey, Earl of Monmouth. In 1675 he succeeded his uncle to the Earldom and died in 1685, when he was succeeded by his son (by his first wife). This engraving should only have been used between 1675 (when he became an Earl) and 1685 (when he died).'\r\nA speculative connection has been made between the 1st Earl of Denbigh and the rosewater sprinkler on the basis that this Earl visited India in 1631. A famous portrait by Anthony van Dyck, now in the National Gallery, depicts the 1st Earl wearing Indian dress.
