Like many contemporary Dutch designers, Brajkovic is interested in distorting familiar objects to encourage us to think about them in a new way. The chair is made from bronze rather than wood, another feature that defies our expectations.\r\n\r\nThe embroidery on the chair reflects Brajkovic's interest in history. It shows three fantastical animals drawn from medieval bestiaries: a camel, a hippopotamus and a wild ass. Like the shape of the chair, these creatures seem at once familiar and strange. The embroidery is 'stretched' across the back of the chair in a witty gesture, which gives it the blurred appearance of a fast-moving object on film.","physicalDescription":"Double chair made up of two separate seats with a conjoined back, bronze, with dark grey upholstery embroidered in white and yellow.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Brajkovic, Sebastian","id":"A24560"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Bronze","id":"AAT10957"},{"text":"Fabric","id":"AAT162391"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Embroidery","id":"x40351"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Bronze with a nitric-acid burned patina, embroidered upholstery","categories":[{"text":"Bronze","id":"THES49033"},{"text":"Embroidery","id":"THES48960"},{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"},{"text":"Interiors","id":"THES48933"},{"text":"Household objects","id":"THES48939"},{"text":"Shekou","id":"THES279777"},{"text":"Values of Design","id":"THES279818"},{"text":"Design Society","id":"THES279819"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2009CR4000","2009CR3999","2009CR3891","2009CR3883"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES342393"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"chair","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Holland","id":"x29020"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2008","earliest":"2008-01-01","latest":"2008-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased after a generous award from the Moët Hennessy Design Art London Prize","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"105","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"140","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"85","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Camelus Indicus, Indianisch Camel","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Embroidered alongside picture of camel on proper right chair seat"},{"content":"Onager Aldro, Wald Esel\r\nHippopotamus, Wasser Ochs","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Embroidered alongside pictures of wild ass (?) and hippopotamus on proper left chair seat"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Lathe Chair VIII, 2-seated chair, by Sebastian Brajkovic, 2008, bronze with nitric-acid burned patina, embroidered upholstery.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"Attribution note: 1 of 8","productionType":{"text":"Limited edition","id":"THES48862"},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"camel","id":"x30284"},{"text":"hippopotamus","id":"x38137"},{"text":"ass (animal)","id":"x30281"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"‘Lathe Chair VIII’\r\nSebastian Brajkovic (born Netherlands, 1975)\r\n2008\r\nBronze, nitric-acid burned patina, embroidered fabric\r\nEdition of 8, no. 1 exhibited\r\nV&A: W.40-2008\r\nPurchased after a generous award from the Moët Hennessy – Design Art London Prize\r\n\r\n\r\nThe ‘Lathe Chair’ series was conceived by rotating 19th-century chair shapes around a central axis to stretch them.
