Early dominoes were made of thin pieces of bone which were later glued onto ebony backings. This enabled them to stand on their edges. Later sets were wooden with cheaper versions being made of plastic. There are generally twenty-eight dominoes in a set and the usual number of players is four, giving each player seven dominoes at the start of each game.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Empire","id":"A24546"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Games","id":"THES48947"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"YVA","id":"THES48593"},"images":["2025PH2346"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"006","id":"THES344363"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"006","id":"THES344363"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"boxes (containers)","id":"AAT45643"}],[{"text":"dominoes (game pieces)","id":"AAT211090"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1930s","earliest":"1930-01-01","latest":"1939-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Norman Andrews","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Cardboard box containing 28 bakelite dominoes, made in England by Empire in the 1930s","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"Mass produced","id":"THES48863"},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["B.140:2-2004","B.140:1-2004"],"accessionNumberNum":"140","accessionNumberPrefix":"B","accessionYear":2004,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","boxes (containers)","dominoes (game pieces)"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-04-02","recordCreationDate":"2009-02-16","availableToBook":false}}
