Mir Jumla was the title of Mir Muhammad Amin, an Iranian from a prominent family in Isfahan. He travelled from Iran to the Deccan and entered the service of the Qutb Shahi ruler of Golconda who gave him the title. After some years, he returned to Iran, but arrived at the court of the Mughal emperor Jahangir (r. 1605-1627) in 1618. Mir Jumla was soon given high office, being appointed Khan-i Saman, the equivalent of Lord Chamberlain, as early as 1620. He kept this position under Jahangir's son and successor, Shah Jahan, and died in 1637.\r\nThe portrait was probably painted by Shiv Das between Mir Jumla's arrival in the Mughal empire in 1618 and his promotion in 1620. Little is known about the artist other than that he worked in the royal atelier in the late 16th and early 17th century under Akbar (r.1556-1605), and remained there during Jahangir's reign, but his surviving work is relatively rare. The borders surrounding the painting, densely decorated with gold flowering plants, Chinese clouds and hovering insects on indigo-dyed paper, were almost certainly also done in Jahangir's reign.","physicalDescription":"Painting, opaque watercolour and gold on paper, Mir Jumla, ascribed to Shiv Das. Mir Jumla is depicted standing facing left on a brown ground. The gold ground border surrounding him is filled with ornamented verses in Persian cut from another sheet and pasted onto the page. The indigo-dyed paper of the outer border is filled with gold blossoming plants. The subject and artist are identified in the black Persian inscription on the lower border on undyed paper between the indigo border and the portrait.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Shiv Das","id":"A24540"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paint","id":"AAT15029"},{"text":"opaque watercolour","id":"x35013"},{"text":"paper","id":"AAT14109"},{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painted","id":"AAT54216"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Painted in opaque watercolour and gold on paper","categories":[{"text":"Paintings","id":"THES48917"},{"text":"Bonita Trust Indian Paintings Cataloguing Project","id":"THES263148"}],"styles":[{"text":"Mughal court","id":"x30977"},{"text":"Mughal","id":"AAT18939"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2013GB1056","2006AT8897"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES403459"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"painting","id":"AAT33618"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Mughal Empire","id":"THES262021"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1618-20","earliest":"1613-01-01","latest":"1622-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by Lady Wantage","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"39","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"page","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"26.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"page","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"13.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"painting","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"painting minus border","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"shabih-e mir jumla amal-e shiv das","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"Likeness of Mir Jumla, the work of Shiv Das","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"There is also a small oval seal stamp at lower right.
