Nérac \"Xiat\"\r\n\r\nAfter Lullier's dismissal, command of the National Guard was temporarily placed in the hands of three officers who were raised to the rank of General, including Jules Bergeret. At the outset of the disastrous sortie on 3 April confidence was in the air. No-one was more sure of a successful outcome than Bergeret, who declared in his first despatch from the front ‘Bergeret himself is at Neuilly.’ A few hours later, after a shell from Mount Valérien had disrupted his plans, and a cavalry charge had scattered his inexperienced troops, he was back in Paris, where he was arrested by Cluseret for ‘insubordination’. He is shown in a carriage because, having suffered a serious accident in his childhood, he was unable to lead his men on foot.\r\n\r\nLithograph, coloured by hand.\r\nFrom a series of 6.
