Bismarck originally demanded an indemnity of 600 milliard francs but this was reduced to 500 after negotiations. One milliard was to be paid during 1871 and the rest within three years. France paid her debts with amazing speed. The first demi-milliard reached Germany only one month after the collapse of the Commune and the complete sum was paid off by September 1873.\r\n\r\nLithograph, coloured by hand.
