Enormous queues assembled outside the shops to buy pathetically small quantities of food. Horsemeat, the food of the poor when it first made its appearance in the butchers' shops in 1866, was a taste forced on everyone. Many queued for nothing at all, as they found themselves unable to pay for the cheapest meat at inflated siege prices. The rich, however, continued to live relatively well, eating the exotic meats, like rat, which were not controlled by rationing.\r\n\r\nLithograph, coloured by hand.\r\nFrom a series of 24.
