English examples were developed in the mid 18th century when the Chinese tea bottle was superseded by the tea caddy, having an opening large enough to accommodate a small spoon to dispense and measure the tea and when the cover (the thimble top) was no longer used as a measure. Caddy spoons were always required to be hallmarked, being excluded from the exemption of the English act of 1790 relating to small articles.","physicalDescription":"Silver, saddle shaped with four sided bowl engraved with two rosettes and a wavy border; the handle is engraved with floral decoration and ends in a circular plate bearing engraved initials.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Simpson & Son","id":"A24441"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"}],"techniques":[{"text":"engraving (incising)","id":"AAT53829"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silver, engraved","categories":[{"text":"Drinking","id":"THES48965"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Tea, Coffee & Chocolate wares","id":"THES48886"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2015HT0690","2015HT0691","2015HT0692"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"016","id":"THES408961"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Caddy spoon","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Birmingham","id":"x28748"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1820","earliest":"1815-01-01","latest":"1824-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Gift of J.
