As a long-time collaborator of the Adam brothers, Clérisseau understandably might have contributed an ornamental screen wall to a London town house designed by them. Soane's connection with the events is less easy to pinpoint. As a young employee of Henry Holland after 1772 he certainly knew Robert Adam, whom he greatly admired. Perhaps because of this Soane accumulated a considerable amount of information on Lansdowne House, both in the forms of drawings and account books. Presumably Soane himself witnessed the collapse of the alcove, one of the few Clérisseau works ever executed. The mishap did not prejudice Soane against Clérisseau's artistic abilities and he avidly collected Clérisseau's gouaches to the extent that his Museum has the largest holdings of them outside Russia.","physicalDescription":"Plan and elevation of a garden alcove and screen wall at Lansdowne House, Berkeley Square, London.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Sir John Soane","id":"N2369"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Clerisseau","id":"A26485"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":"after"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper (fiber product)","id":"AAT14109"},{"text":"wash","id":"AAT11051"},{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"},{"text":"pencil","id":"x30347"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing","id":"AAT54196"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pen and ink with grey wash over pencil","categories":[{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"},{"text":"Architecture","id":"THES48993"},{"text":"London history","id":"THES267865"},{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"}],"styles":[{"text":"Neo-classical","id":"x38958"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2013GJ7508","2014GY0036"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLE","id":"THES49657"},"free":"","case":"A","shelf":"104","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"drawing (image-making)","id":"AAT54196"}],[{"text":"designs","id":"AAT102051"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"late 18th century-first half of 19th century","earliest":"1750-01-01","latest":"1850-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"36","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"42.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Dimensions taken from <i>Sir John Soane: Catalogues of the Architectural Drawings in the Victoria and Albert Museum</i> by Pierre de la Ruffinière du Prey","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Clérisseau for Lord Shelburne in Berkeley Square.
