The elections took place between the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989 and the reunification of East and West Germany.\r\n\r\nThe poster is in the style of a news sheet and is designed to show the geneal political aims of the Alliance.At first the aims of the Alliance had to be communicated in joint appeals and statements. This was mainly done through advertisements in the big newspapers and those messages were then repeated at the posters. The central slogan was: ‘Nie wieder Sozialismus’ - ‘Never again Socialism’.\r\n\r\nThe Alliance for Germany was an opposition coalition formed on the 5th of February 1990 in then West-Berlin to stand for the 'Volkskammer' (People's Chamber) election. It got the majority of the seats and thus formed the interim-government until reunification with Lothar de Maizière as Minister President.\r\n\r\nThe CDU (Chistian Democratic Union), DSU (German Social Union) and DA (Democratic Awakening) were part of the Alliance. The political aims (reunification of Germany and reconstitution of the federal states) were mainly determined from the West German side of the CDU. The then Federal Chancellor Helmut Kohl appeared at many election campaign activities for the East German CDU.","physicalDescription":"Comprises double-sided sheet of text. It was a right wing coalition of the Democratic Awakening, the German Social Union and the Christian Democratic Union, who agreed to conduct a joint election campaign. Helmut Kohl, Chancellor of West Germany attended the meeting and promised them his party’s full support, including funding. The coalition parties did not however form one faction after the election despite pressure from their West German counterparts.","briefDescription":"Poster, lithograph, news-sheet style, '18 March: Alliance for Germany', issued for the campaign of the 'Alliance for Germany' for first free parliamentary elections in the German Democratic Republic (GDR), GDR, 1990","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"News-sheet promoting the Alliance for Germany coalition in the campaign for the East German election of 18 March 1990","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[{"text":"Berlin","id":"x28746"}],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.3079-1990"],"accessionNumberNum":"3079","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":1990,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-20","recordCreationDate":"2009-01-31","availableToBook":false}}
