The beaker, knife, fork, spoon and spice box, were made by a London silversmith, George Reid in 1825-6. The form and decoration of the set copies in detail the style of  English travelling sets of the 1690s. The crest and motto of the Chafy family identify the set as perhaps commissioned by the Reverend William Chafy, Vice Chancellor of Cambridge University from 1829-1843. He was wealthy and sociable man and a member of a private dining club, the 'Family', which met once a fortnight in each others houses and prefered to adhere to 'ancient customs and manners'. This historicist portable dining set would have been both functional and approriate to use at the club.","physicalDescription":"Travelling set of cutlery, spice box and beaker, silver-gilt with engraved decoration of scrolls, foliage cherubs closely copying seventeenth century style ornament and forms.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"George Reid","id":"A24409"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver gilt","id":"x37998"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silver-gilt","categories":[],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2009CE2000","2009CE2037","2009CE2021","2009CE1983","2009CE1982"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"66","id":"THES49733"},"free":"","case":"3","shelf":"5","box":""},{"current":{"text":"66","id":"THES49733"},"free":"","case":"3","shelf":"5","box":""},{"current":{"text":"66","id":"THES49733"},"free":"","case":"3","shelf":"5","box":""},{"current":{"text":"66","id":"THES49733"},"free":"","case":"3","shelf":"5","box":""},{"current":{"text":"66","id":"THES49733"},"free":"","case":"3","shelf":"5","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Beaker","id":""}],[{"text":"knife (culinary tool)","id":""}],[{"text":"Fork","id":""}],[{"text":"Spoon","id":""}],[{"text":"Box","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1825-6","earliest":"1825-05-29","latest":"1826-05-28"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by John Jones","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Mark of George Reid","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""},{"content":"Full London Hallmarks for 1825-6","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Blade of knife marked \"Barker\""},{"content":"","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Crest and motto of the Chafy family"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Dorothy Fallon, 'A Couvert for Travelling', unpublished essay for the V&A/RCA History of Art Course, 2008"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["956D-1882","956C-1882","956B-1882","956A-1882","956-1882"],"accessionNumberNum":"956","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1882,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Box","Spoon","Fork","knife (culinary tool)","Beaker"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-09","recordCreationDate":"2009-01-29","availableToBook":false}}
