In 1857 he was elected to the Corps Législatif, where he strongly opposed the Imperial regime. When during the 1860s his attitude to Republicanism changed and he gave his support to the Empire many of the left-wing felt betrayed.\r\n\r\nLate in 1869 he formed the Liberal Government at Napoleon’s request. When news of the first disasters of the Franco-Prussian War reached Paris, his cabinet was driven from office and Ollivier sought refuge in Italy.
