It is probably a 'Little Buffer' chair, the design of which was patented by the Baby Scooter Car Co in 1922, but any original maker's marks have been obliterated in the re-painting. The donors used it for their children, Mary, Merilyn, Roger and Bridget, who were born between 1943 and 1956; the chair may have been acquired second-hand because such items were scarce during World War Two and its aftermath, and repainted at that time ('Little Buffer' chairs were made in a dark wood stain and varnished), or during the course of its thirteen or so years of usage..\r\n\r\nThe inclusion of a head and shoulders image of the Walt Disney cartoon and comic character Donald Duck is likely to be an attempt at producing something cheering in a time of austerity. Donald was created by the Disney artist Dick Lundy and first appeared in 1934.","physicalDescription":"Child's low wooden armchair re-painted in pale blue paint and mounted on three rubber rimmed wheels, the central one slidable on a separate forward axis. It has an enclosed back and sides, and a hinged oblong feeding tray which has been hand-painted with a head and shoulders motif of Donald Duck wearing his trademark sailor blouse and hat. The tray drops over the front of the chair and has a hinged drop leg with metal hooks and loops to hold it in position. There are two small metal clasps within the seat to hold retaining straps (now missing).","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wood","id":"AAT11914"},{"text":"rubber","id":"AAT12941"},{"text":"metal","id":"AAT10900"}],"techniques":[{"text":"cutting","id":"AAT53069"},{"text":"moulding","id":"AAT53134"},{"text":"painting","id":"x30598"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Wood with rubber and metal parts","categories":[{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"},{"text":"Children & Childhood","id":"THES48980"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"YVA","id":"THES48593"},"images":["2009CR2554"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES344145"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Chair","id":""}],[{"text":"mobile chair","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"UK","id":"x29336"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1922-1950","earliest":"1922-01-01","latest":"1950-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"MISC.215-1984","id":"O1127193"},"association":"Version"},{"object":{"text":"B.301:1-1996","id":"O38578"},"association":"Version"}],"creditLine":"Given by Mr & Mrs C E Turner","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"27.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"35.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"maximum","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"49.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"maximum","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Gift of Mr & Mrs C E Turner (RF 83/956).
