It was staged in Berlin as a one-act ballet at the Theatre des Westerns on 21 May 1910 with new sets and costumes by Bakst, and repeated on the Company's visits to the city in 1912 and 1914. <i>Le Carnaval</i> became the best-loved Ballets Russes ballet in Berlin, resulting in its choice for recreation by Meissen.\r\n\r\nPaul Scheurich was born in New York and emigrated to Berlin in 1900 where he studied at the Academy of Fine Art from 1900-1902. He developed a career as a graphic designer, book illustrator and poster designer and was also a skilled sculptor. He worked for several German porcelain factories but appears to have begun working with Meissen in 1913, for whom he sculpted 87 figures over 20 years. These figures were modelled in 1914 but may not have gone into production until 1915.","physicalDescription":"Porcelain figurine of the male character Eusebius standing on an oval white base, his right leg bent, his left leg out behind him, his left hand to his chest, his right arm out behind him, as if imploring or pleading with another. He wears a light blue waisted coat with a pink rose in the right lapel, a blue bow tie, brown checked trousers and white gloves. A Commedia dell' Arte-style black mask, his white top hat, a riding crop and a spray of flowers are on the base.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Scheurich","id":"A7151"},"association":{"text":"sculptor","id":"AAT25181"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Meissen porcelain factory","id":"A9173"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28674"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"porcelain","id":"AAT10662"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Figures & Decorative ceramics","id":"THES48954"},{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2009BY8361","2009BY8364","2009BY8363","2009BY8362","2009BY8360","2010EA6257"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES384815"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"figurines","id":"AAT47455"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Germany","id":"x28873"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1914","earliest":"1914-01-01","latest":"1914-12-31"},"association":{"text":"modelled","id":"x30779"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"S.707-2009","id":"O184142"},"association":"Object"},{"object":{"text":"S.708-2009","id":"O184716"},"association":"Object"},{"object":{"text":"S.709-2009","id":"O184726"},"association":"Object"},{"object":{"text":"S.710-2009","id":"O184737"},"association":"Object"}],"creditLine":"Purchased with assistance from the Friends of the Victoria and Albert Museum and the London Archives of the Dance","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"23.0","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"17.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"maximum width, heel of left foot to edge of base","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Figurine of the character Eusebius in the ballet <i>Le Carnaval</i> choreographed by Mikhail Fokine with music by Robert Schumann and designs by Léon Bakst, created in 1910 for Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes.
