In 1698, Martin Lister (1639-1712), an English physician and naturalist, on a visit to Paris, described a group of wares, as ‘indeed little else but a total vitrification’, and refered to them as 'Gombroon ware'. Gombroon was a reference to the then European name for Bandar-e Abbas, the main trading port on the Persian Gulf. Because of their glass-like thinness, Safavid white wares have since been associated with this description. The English and Dutch East India Company imported Gombroon wares well into the 1750s. Examples are thought to have been in the collection Philippe d’Orléans, Regent of France (1674-1723), described as ‘<i>porcelaine blanche de Perse</i>’, other examples were in the collection of Augustus the Strong (1670-1733) at Dresden, and in England, Horace Walpole (1717-97), of Strawberry Hill, owned, ‘Two basons of most ancient Gombroon china, a present from Lord Vere, out of the collection of Lady Elizabeth Germaine’ (1680–1769), a noted china collector.","physicalDescription":"Bottle, fritware, of pear shape, the base dimpled with indentations, having a narrow tapering neck, the white body covered in a clear glaze.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"fritware","id":"x29419"}],"techniques":[{"text":"moulded","id":"x30076"},{"text":"glazed","id":"AAT53914"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Fritware, glazed","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"}],"styles":[{"text":"Safavid","id":"AAT21712"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MES","id":"THES48607"},"images":["2008BR9493"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"137 (VA)","id":"THES49876"},"free":"","case":"31","shelf":"8","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Sprinkler","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Iran","id":"x30220"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1650-1725","earliest":"1650-01-01","latest":"1725-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"13.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"conversion","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"8.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Sprinkler or bottle, fritware, of pear-shape, the white body covered in a clear glaze; Iran, 1650-1725.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Arthur Lane, <u> Later Islamic Potter: Persia, Syria, Egypt Turkey</u>, Faber and Faber, London, 1957, pp. 109-111."}],"production":"\"Gombroon ware\"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["2600-1876"],"accessionNumberNum":"2600","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1876,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-09","recordCreationDate":"2009-01-14","availableToBook":false}}
