The period from 1765 to 1776 is associated the use of blue grounds at Worcester and the stripes of royal blue colour on this teapot are in keeping with late eighteenth-century taste. However, Worcester wares do not usually bear both an underglaze blue factory mark, as is evident on the base of this teapot, and overglaze blue painting, as is evident in the decoration (usually an underglaze blue mark was only used for patterns which included underglaze blue in their decoration). This suggests that the teapot was probably painted outside the factory and the thickly applied gilding suggests a much later date than the manufacture of the teapot. \r\n\r\nThe bright enamel blue colour on this teapot is often termed 'bleu de roi' or 'king's blue' and is characetristic of wares produced by the French factory Sèvres, which launched this shade in1763.","physicalDescription":"Teapot and cover of soft-paste porcelain painted with enamels, gilded and moulded.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Worcester porcelain factory","id":"A9260"},"association":{"text":"manufacturer","id":"x33306"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"soft paste porcelain","id":"AAT10665"}],"techniques":[{"text":"moulded","id":"x30076"},{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},{"text":"gilded","id":"AAT53789"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Soft-paste porcelain painted with enamels, gilded and moulded","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Porcelain","id":"THES48907"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2009CB8649","2017KB3917"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"143","id":"THES49867"},"free":"","case":"2","shelf":"2","box":""},{"current":{"text":"143","id":"THES49867"},"free":"","case":"2","shelf":"2","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Teapot","id":""}],[{"text":"Cover","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Worcester","id":"x33938"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1770","earliest":"1765-01-01","latest":"1774-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"ca. 1850-1865","earliest":"1845-01-01","latest":"1865-12-31"},"association":{"text":"decorated","id":"AAT56257"},"note":"The enamelling and gilding were added in the mid-19th century, before ca. 1867-68"}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"414:516-1885","id":"O185004"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"414:656-1885","id":"O184993"},"association":"Set"}],"creditLine":"Given by Lady Charlotte Schreiber","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"14.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"13","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"A fretted square","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Painted on base in underglaze blue"}],"objectHistory":"Purchased by Lady Charlotte Schreiber at a sale at Sotheby's for £4 10 shillings in December1868.
