Kean first played Richard in 1814 and became closely associated with the role. His outfit, a theatrical interpretation of Tudor dress with an ermine-trimmed robe and hat, was the stage's standard costume for Richard III in the 18th and 19th centuries.  \n\nSartain's mezzotint was originally published in the &lt;i&gt;Eclectic Magazine of Foreign Literature, Science and Art&lt;/i&gt; (New York: Leavitt, Trow &amp; Co, October 1851, p.144).
