The Trent & Mersey Canal first opened in 1777. Josiah Wedgwood I (1730-95) was a key supporter of its construction. His factory at Etruria, which produced Wedgwood ware from 1769 to 1949 before production moved to Barlaston, sat directly on the canal. Wedgwood benefitted greatly from this transport link, which enabled goods to be smoothly transported to market with reduced risk of breakages, and allowed for easier access to raw materials like coal.
