He was born in Croydon and educated at Addiscombe New College before studying architecture at London Polytechnic. During that period, he worked for several architectural firms: James Ransome and Cootes, Darcy Braddell and Humphry Deane, and Pite, Son and Fairweather. In 1939 he qualified and set up his own practice in York. He went on to work on c. 700 churches in various capacities: architecture, renovation and interior and furnishing design. He was particularly inspired by the Arts and Crafts architects, William Lethaby and George Prior, yet embraced Modernism, demonstrating that the two styles were compatible.\r\n\r\nThe original St Mark’s Church in Sheffield, which this model relates to, dates from 1868 and was severely damaged in 1940 by an incendiary bomb. The Gothic Revival tower and spire, south porch, and several walls were deemed repairable, and Pace's design integrated these preserved elements into a new modernist style. Pace completed the first of three fully worked out designs for the new church in 1951. This model depicts the second iteration produced in 1958, which envisioned a larger footprint and a new structural system of two reinforced concrete arms. The model, made by pioneering architectural modelmaker John B. Thorp (1862–1939), was exhibited in a touring show of modern church designs and displayed at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition (1958).","physicalDescription":"An architectural model of a church with a Gothic Revival tower and spire and Modernist nave with a perspex hood.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Pace, George Gaze","id":"AUTH412965"},"association":{"text":"Architect","id":"THES265157"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Thorp, John Brown","id":"AUTH412969"},"association":{"text":"model makers","id":"AAT248289"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Thorp Modelmakers","id":"AUTH413350"},"association":{"text":"model makers","id":"AAT248289"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wood","id":"AAT11914"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"model making","id":"AAT53619"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Wood and paper","categories":[{"text":"Architectural models","id":"THES274433"},{"text":"Architecture","id":"THES48993"},{"text":"Religion","id":"THES48900"}],"styles":[{"text":"Modernist","id":"AAT21474"},{"text":"Gothic Revival","id":"AAT21452"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2026PT0336","2026PT0346","2026PT0359","2026PT0355","2026PT0349","2026PT0463"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLE","id":"THES49657"},"free":"","case":"EXP","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Architectural model","id":"x44244"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1958","earliest":"1958-01-01","latest":"1958-12-31"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"64","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"Model fits within the perspex case provided which measures: 64cm x 43cm x 59cm."},{"dimension":"Width","value":"59","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"Model fits within the perspex case provided which measures: 64cm x 43cm x 59cm."},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"43","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"Model fits within the perspex case provided which measures: 64cm x 43cm x 59cm."}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"On plaque:\r\nSt Mark's Church Sheffield\r\nArchitect George G.
