Mary Headlam began to create illustrations to the fairy tales of the Danish author in the early 1900s. At this time, she contributed illustrations to fairy tale anthologies and annuals, such as The Magic City and Other Fairy Tales (1903) by Netta Syrett (1865-1943) and The Dream Garden (1905), edited by Syrett. Andersen’s stories gained widespread popularity in Britain as they started to be translated into English from the 1840s for a growing children’s market, although Andersen intended a readership of all ages. Headlam’s illustrations were not published as an edition, but she would rework many of them as wood-engravings in the 1930s after she began printmaking in earnest from the mid-1920s.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Drawing, studies of female figures for an illustration of Walderman Daa's daughters, from Hans Christian Andersen, by Mary Headlam, chalk, pen and gouache, ca. 1890-1939","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.608-2026"],"accessionNumberNum":"608","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":2026,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-07-22","recordCreationDate":"2026-04-22","availableToBook":false}}
